Being sent on a course, but can't afford it?

First of all wind your neck in. If and when I get told by a mod not to post then maybe I'l listen, until then I've got as much right as anyone else.

Secondly, I don't have my head in my jacksie, I am of the understanding that the RAF is not a personal finance company and is not here to subsidise others poor money management.

Yes the RAF is sending him on a course which could incur cost. However to ensure this doesn't happen there is the advance system. Whos fault is it that if the advance gets paid into the OP's account, the bank will recoup it? It is the RAF's.... I think not!

Tell you what next time I'm a bit fcuking skint I'll go and have a cry on the padres shoulder.

I wonder how many visits he will get when pay as you dine comes in and people dont have the cash to feed themselves for the month, because their car has broken down etc etc.

Learn to manage your money better. Thats my bottom line. Harsh I know but the line has to be drawn somewhere!

Wow

I'm glad your not my line management/padre/etc etc..

Not once have I asked for a loan or whinged about having to go on a course, after all it's a week in a nice hotel with everything paid for :)

I'm merely asking for the advance (that I normally) claim to payed to me in cash rather than into my account, this will enable me to go on the course and the Air Force will be a happier place because of it.

You know nothing as to why I'm in the situation I'm in right now so please don't come across as all high and mighty, I will NEVER EVER let my family go without so I can go on a work related course.

If I'd come on here saying how I'd bought myself a new car and TV in the same month I'd expect to be told where to go but that is certainly not the case.

I have alot of sympathy with Mr Mouse. Just before I got married my cars' head gasket blew so I borrowed the misses car, the gear box broke. We both needed cars to get to work so we had to but two cars using the money we had saved for the wedding and pay for the wedding and honeymoon on credit. This put us in difficulty for months afterwards. Things happen that you have no control of, so: Mr Mouse ignore all the 'you should be saving' comments that imply that your situation is of you own making.
The point is no-one should have to pay up front for anything. Its unfair to expect anyone to stump up cash and wait for the money to be paid. For starters it costs you money (interest), it also puts pressure on your family budget. I claim advances for everything (even IE - if I can get anyway with it). How have we got into a situation where Airman paying upfront is exceptable? Stick you your guns and say you want an cash advance or your not going. Speak to the Padre as well, you should be able to tell him your exact situation and he will fight your corner without any come back.
Good luck Mr Mouse.

Did I say it was of his own making? No.
Did I say he should pay for his accommodation? No.
Did I say having something put aside for emergencies will help in future? Yes.

Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

And if you think saving is a bad idea then you are going to find yourself overdrawn again one day, and again, and again...

You really haven't read this thread properly have you?
No one, as far as I can see, is saying that he should pay to go on a course.
No one has said it's acceptable for him to pay up front.
As pointed out by many people, there is a mechanism in place to get an advance on the costs for subsistance allowance.
There is a mechanism in place for the B&B element of the hotel to be paid for by the service.
Also, by wise use of his £5 a day unreceipted incidental expenses he could be slightly in profit - I haven't managed to spend £5 on a paper, a letter home or personal phone calls a day yet. :pDT_Xtremez_30:

Unfortunately, Mr A Mouse has got himself into a financial position, through no fault of the Service, where the advance through the normal route of JPA isn't acceptable, even though he could put the claim in and get the money paid to his bank account. :S I'm sure the Padre will say a prayer, but unless God works in Accounts Flight, I can't see what he can do. Maybe Mr A Mouse can get a cash advance, but unless he gets off his backside and goes to Accounts and tells them his circumstances and asks, he may never find out. :pDT_Xtremez_21:

Another option may be to get the advance for subsistance allowance paid into his account (the Black Hole). If the course is at a service establishment, then have breakfast at the hotel (paid for by his unit adminers as part of his hotel bill) and lunch and evening meal in the Mess (which he'd have to pay for even if staying in service accommodation) - so no way will he incur a £27 a day subsistance charge. :pDT_Xtremez_40:

Just how much interest does your current account pay on a couple of hundred quid for a matter of a week? My guess is that it barely runs into a penny, let alone the possibility of tens of pounds that your post would have us think. Even for a claim after the event, JPA in my experience has the money in my bank within 3 days of me entering the claim.

let me get this straight?

let me get this straight?

So....
The OP got pinged for a course
He had some sort of unforseen financial expense taking him £600 (?)into the red.
He is entitled to an advance
that advance will go into his account and mean he is still in the red but less the advance say £400

Now he can't pay for the hotel.

Is that the problem?

What about next month ? you will still be in the red? I guess do you want another advance then so you can buy food petrol to get to work?

Not once have I asked for a loan or whinged about having to go on a course, after all it's a week in a nice hotel with everything paid for
Which with IE is more than you would get if you spent the week at home paying for your own food/bills

A solution without the padre....

Pay for the hotel on a credit card?
Or pay for the hotel with your normal account and you will be £600 in the red again as you would have been this month without any advance or any course!
Then make a mental note to scrimp a bit and try to get a few quid together to build up a few quid savings.

As i see it the problem is you have had to pay out for something and have no money, so that is the problem the whole course/advance stuff is irrelevant?

Thats what I thought. Surely if you are in your overdraft, apply for an advance that takes you out of the overdraft, then spend the advance on the hotel and food etc, you will just be in the same overdrawn position as you were before? You wont be any worse off. I dont get it. Im probably missing something.

This quote has made my Friday afternoon.

Also thank you for the last few posts, as I was starting to feel like I was the only one seeing sense.

Bloody hell, we will be arguing what colour our uniform is next ;)

It is possible to go over an overdraft and thus the instant money is paid into the account whatever your negative balance was will 'go away' and you will hopefully have whatever is left.

Next month will be fine as the belt will be very tight, unfortunatley this month is a bit of a ****** as you may all have guessed by now.

And once more for the slow amongst us. I'm not expecting anything 'extra' from the service, nor to cancel the course, nor anything else which I shouldn't be entitled to, simply to have another way to pay for the food and accomodation.
