I've just applied for the RAF as a ICT Specialist due to my civilian qualifications, im having some doubt about this and interested in the Avionics trade.

My question is am I able to change my trade choice during the application process or not?

the last chance is after your AST test. once you have done the test they tell you your scores and then ask if you would like to change or not or discuss your options.

this is your chance. but if you make your mind up before this point, give them a phonecall. i did the same switch after my AST from ict to avionics.

Just out of interest, what would the situation be it you happen to fail the medical for your chosen trade, for example on eyesight? Do you get another choice?

The recruiter did say they were expecting it to close within the next two weeks. Avionics is closed to so will just have to tight.

You can change anytime you wish. We normally ask you to tell us your job choice at your interview. So if you haven't had your interview yet i would call your AFCO and tell them you wish to apply for avonics. Be aware that if you do you your entry date into the RAF will be a lot later, I would suggest after March 2010.

Is avionics a pinch point trade still? i know they are all taking ages to in now but is there still a huge demand for fairys?

Not anymore the trade is closed at the moment. More chance of getting mechanical earlier.

Take it I still go through the process if I go for avionics, just a much delayed entry until the trade opens again or does everything freeze until the trade reopens?

As far as I'm aware, your application process is frozen until the trades become available. I was going to apply for Fireman, but have changed to Regiment Gunner which is still available.

heh im just hoping i got in before it all got put on hold. one of my interviewers said it was counted by the time you do your AST that your "in" the trade unless you fail somehow along the way. but if its done by when your application to basic is requested, i may have problems lol

Really really think about your actions before leaping at various trades guys...For example being a chef in civvy street and being a chef in the RAF are miles apart in comparision...In civvy street you can hang up your apron and go home, and if you don't really enjoy doing it but it pays the bills you can leave it at the door as you walk out...With us you may live in a tent or hut next to your kitchen on a 4 month out of area once every 18 months, whilst some local git takes pot shots at you, slogging 12 hour shifts out 7 days a week...The committment is so much more of it...Imagine if everyday you deeply and bitterly regretted choosing that trade because they just happened to be open that week and you wanted to put on the blues a bit earlier than was right?

SO if you just pick a trade because they are still open this could be a rash move...What is the difference in waiting 12 months for the job you actually want to do and will enjoy for 9/12/22 years or even up to when you are 55 years old!?

Ask yourselves this...Are you starving? Are you living in sack cloth? Will you spontaneuosly combust if you delay for what in the big picture is a very short time in your long life (12-18 months) to make sure you get the trade that will make you the happiest and in turn us to receive the best out of you as you will be happier?

Don't jump into stuff...walk carefully with your eyes open and your heart convinced!

So if I phoned AFCO and informed them of my want to change trade, would they freeze my AST or would I still take that and everything else gets frozen?

Hi James, I'm sitting my AST on the 15th for a closed trade, (AMM) and was advised to sit the test, see the results and wait for the trade to open.
