Am I right in saying that there is a big problem with having this test done as it is no longer been done at Cranwell I have been told I could take up to a year to have it done is this right?

I had this done at a local optician as some jumped up medic wouldn't give me an airfield driving permit cos I failed the fookin Ishihara test. By the way I had been TG4 for about 16 yrs prior to this. Being colour blind was not an option.

Any optician should be able to carry out a lantern test and provide a report for you.

Incidently an Ishihara test must be carried out in natural light and not some smelly Med Centre back room with flourescent lighting (no diffuser fitted).

Rant over... I feel better.

Good luck.

I asked about having it at a local optician and they said no as they would not recognise it as being vaild.

Probably not a good idea to rock the boat but I'd question why?

Is detailed medical report from a trained, qualified opthamologist not good enough????

It's stupid decisions like that which makes me happy I'm now a civi.

Peterborough hospital definatly do the lantern test as once again some jumped up jobs worth told me I could not have an Airfield driving licence, end result CP3 and finally found out why I had failed those dot tests at Swinderby all those years ago.

Do you have to take the lantern test with every trade if you fail the Ishihara plates.

SLightly OT but somehow relevant...

As a kid I always wanted to be a train driver...and almost made it! Got offered the job subject to medical...Was in there for two mins then walked out a dismal failure with that damned Ishihara plate test.
Now, four years previously, I joined the army. Normal colour vision required...and I got in...!
After being rejected by British Rail for *not having normal colour vison* I applied to join the RAF Regiment and was accepted (Normal colour vision required again) and was also granted an airfiled driving permit.
I asked about Ishihara plates and whether I really was colour blind or not cos I have no problem distinguishing colours... and the med centre admitted that some people do have a problem with the Ishihara plates (ie me) yet I passed the lantern test with flying colours (pun intended).
If the Ishihara is so flawed, why do companies still rely on them as a means of screening potential employees that may well be up to the job and have normal colour vision, yet are unable to to see spotty numbers that probably has nothing at all to do with the job they are being screened for.
Eg, I was fortunate to ride in the cab of a train and was easily able to identify the colours of signals as we approached...yet at no point was I required to identify a series of hidden spotted numbers that was critical to safety...!

Discrimination, methinks

Hi there I waited just over 2 months but I rang the AFCO now and again and found I got a quicker response.

I failed the lantern test but does not affect me getting in as you need to be CP4 to be a stacker but they need to test to see if your CP3 which would allow you to drive on airfields.

You look at a screen and tell the doctor what the colour of the two dots are simple really.

It also took another 3 weeks for my results to be sent back to my AFCO but was allowed to do my PJFT in between which I passed. I now have my medical on the 5th of May.

I also can't do the Sahara (sorry for the spelling not quite sure on the correct name). Obviously this makes me Cp3 or worse! Planning on being a firefighter so hopefully will breeze the other test!
