I started resettlement/terminal etc in Oct and was discharged at the end of Nov. Should I have received my testamonial by now??

Good job I didnt need a reference!

That is where your problem might lie then. If you and your Flt Cdr didn't get on, he probably isn't disposed (although he should be) to put it to the top of his priorities. I would suggest asking the Chf Clk if his staff have received it from your Flt Cdr - after all it is your Flt Cdr that writes your testimonial.

Agree with you totally. The amount of service is irrelevant, everyone should receive a testimonial on time and so that they can present it to a future employer. Unfortunately, Flt Cdrs quite often abrogate their responsibility for writing it - but they are the first to complain when they don't get one. Believe me, have had to chase many a Flt Cdr to produce the goods. I have also written many testimonials, narratives in old language, for Flt Cdrs because they couldn't put two words together. If a Flt Cdr is worth his salt, he should know what the individual wants putting in his testimonial - ie, what his future focus is, to assist the individual in his future vocation.

I've drafted countless testimonials on behalf of the "supposed Flt Cdrs" for the guys & gals leaving the mob within my sphere of influence. Each individual has seen the narrative before it has progressed further, to ensure it meets their needs. I can only assume that there are unscrupulous individuals out there who could not give a t0ss what they write about their troops; perhaps the same applies to their SJAR writing skills. If so, i pity the recipients.:pDT_Xtremez_35:

It can't contain anything negative, which is a whole world away from containing only good things. You have no right to reply and if you haven't seen a draft yet, I would consider it highly likely that if what you receive is a "finished article", it will be as it says on the tin, finished and not subject to negotiation. Remember that this is some semblance of a generic job reference.

By law, it can contain negative comments; however they have to be justified and true and stand up to legal argument. In the RAF we have tended to stay away from saying negative things rather than get ourselves into legal trouble, particularly as we might "terminate someone's contract" for a reason that is of no concern to a civilian company.

I must admit I didn't get one on leaving. Is it for anyone who leaves or just those who have done 22 or more? I did however pester my boss for a "to whom it may concern" reference. Perhaps this would be regarded as one, but in truth it only covered my last job.

My 22 years is up at the end of the year, a few weeks ago my boss asked me if I wanted a Testimonial, he did say I didn’t have to have one (why would anyone say no?).

The only thing I got when I left was a service leavers pack, which was pretty rubbish anyway but hay ho been out 2 years this year now
