Fitness Update and AFCO Visit

i posted an earlier post on E-Goat, and just thought id let everyone know how i was going on,

finally, from not being able to run for 3 minutes, im upto 25 mins of nonstop running/jogging, not allowing myself the pleasure of walking.

my longest run so far is exactly 3 miles, across country lanes, hills and a few really boggy bits, im trying to get a feel for what they might throw my way at R.A.F. Halton.

i went to the AFCO today, for a initial interview regarding my job choices, and picked Personnel Administrator, which the Corporal was pleased about, as apparently theirs a shortage.

must admit, i was a bit apprehensive, walking round sheffield with suit trousers and a nice shirt on isnt really my look, but i thought it would make a good impression.

to be honest, i was surprised, by how friendly the staff were, i was expecting a "sit down there, dont move" type of environment, but when i got chatting to the Corporal about why i wanted to join, my hobbies, fitness and what i do for a living,

i dont know if the Corporal was messing around, when he asked what else i had done, other than exercise to prepare myself, i told him id learnt all the Ranks from Airman to Marshal of the Royal Air Force he seemed happy, but gave a "wry" smile.

we seemed to get on quite well, ending up with us chatting about my 4 months in Arizona coming up in May.

i think my decison to wear "suit trousers" and a nice shirt, polished shoes made an impression, just my opinion, but the chav in jeans and trainers in the corner was getting some dirty looks.

i just thought i'd let people know, as last time i was given some handy hints on my last post.

many thanks!!!!!

It sounds like you're doing all the right things, and it never hurts to make a good impression.

Expect some banter from people on here (and when you join) for choosing to be Pers Admin, but banter is all it is. It is perhaps the most diverse trade available when it comes to the jobs (and locations) you could find yourself in. That's why I still enjoy it.

Good luck.

It is the first impressions, there's nothing worse than having to do an initial int with a scruffy tw@t with long hair smelling like he hasn't washed for a month.

It also sticks in the interview's mind so when it comes down to the selection interview they remember and look forward to the interview, rather than thinking they've an interview with the scruffy tw@t who needs a chuffing hair cut

Sounds like you are doing all the right things, being smartly dressed is certainly nothing to be ashamed about ( a few serviceman could do with lessons...).

Just remember, the effort doesn't stop when you reach basic training. Treat your basic training like a 9 week job interview and you won't go far wrong.

Good luck mate, even if you are joining as a shiney! :pDT_Xtremez_31:

Sounds like a text book AFCO visit to me...I don't think PA is a bad trade...Looking (hopefully) a long way down the line but it is one trade that is truly transferable to the outside world...

I stand to be educated but isn't there a lot of posts around the world for shineys in such places as Embassies?

Have you tried looking in the Recruit Forum? (on the right hand side of the Home Page)

There should be plenty of info in there and also a clue as to who is going through the various processes/stages of joining at present.
