Do you want to expand? Mech-Tech? DE? Appo? Time promotion?

My response was to muttywhitedog are you newly promoted?

I was a Mech-Mech initaily but was adviced to gen app for Mech Tech status, like I said a few post ago, it was down to lucky really, from the time I joined up (mid90's) everything fell into place.

So, although you joined as a Mech-Mech you were, effectively, 1st tranche Mech-Tech. So the sentence...

"I can only imagine those newly promoted SNCO's are either 1st tranche Mech-Techs from the early 90's or AV's"

Covers you. Don't know why you commented, I accept it's going to happen, that's why I pointed it out. Wasn't having a dig, just saying how it is.

Out of interest, how long where you a JT and Cpl for? About the same as me maybe?

Well you are going to have to except it happens, I was a JT but I got my third quicker than most, before my 12 year point in fact.

Before 12 Years, hells teeth. That is quite a rarity me old china. Do you have a sore ass per chance or have you truly mastered the pink oboe?

Jokes aside :pDT_Xtremez_15:, when you joined/which scheme/where posted/quality of RO's/knowing when to keep gob shut and when to open it and the quality of your 'reach-around' have all obviously played a part in peoples fortunes.

The early 90's were extremly difficult for TG1/2 and I saw many a Cpl sitting on 9/10 year high/specs and not even getting a sniff.

Funny old game.

I wasn't having a dig either, I have been commenting on this tread for a number of pages since it has been firmly dragged off topic.

I also know a few Sgt who have been promoted on a similar timescale to me, one of which was a SAC (T). I was a JT for 3 years and a Cpl at 23 for 5 years. So I could have been a Sgt at 27 if I had pulled my finger out!!! almost like the good old days

Just the first of the next generation! Watch them come flooding through over the next few years.

Hrm, we have gone off topic...

Anyway, I think there is a god chance of a promotion blockage. I'll try and explain.

Most SNCO's now (I would say) got their third between say 16 to 20 years in, most will stay in for LOS 30. Look at the Cpl's now, they seem to get promoted after say 6 to 10 years, they sign on to 22. For them to get to SNCO there needs to be a place. If that place doesn't materialise then they will be a Cpl for a long time, this will stop future SAC's from getting their tapes.

This pattern could carry over to SNCO's too, as the high-fliers like yourself have to wait for a CT slot, the Cpl's behind will get held up exacerbating the problem.

Make sense? Essentially, there's going to be a blockage because of young CCpl's signing on for 22 and not making the grade for SNCO, let's face it, not every Cpl will get to Sgt.

I wouldn't bank on most staying till LOS 30. There seem to be an increasing amount who are thinking of bailing out at the 22 year point, on of the reasons being, disiusionment with the way that pay is being structured.

Which could possibly bring us nicely back on topic (or maybe not)

Which links to another thread............TG1 Mechanicals Cpl-Sgt board this year blew the quotas out of the water. They predicted 40 in 6 months and 44 for the next 6 months. Within 4 months they had got to 85. There are lots not staying in.

It's been mentioned before but could the down turn in the nations financial status cause some (not all) to rethink PVR or extension to service, till it settles down. After all there's a fair few techie jobs out there being axed (Rolls Royce and various civvy airlines). That could mean less positions for grabs in other jobs too as they move to fill other gaps. Especially when there is a potential 12 mth lead time from PVR to exit date.

So, to conclude, though it pains me to say, why would we get a Trade Gp 1 pay increase? More will stay in so retention issues reduce!?

BB the recession may be a factor in a retention bonus but the little darlings coming through at the moment are seeing the fact that they are being stiffed and aren't signing on. The recession may keep the older generation in at the moment but a 25 year old SACT can see an easier life for the same pay. Add that to the fact that there is a well entrenched, very bitter cadre of SNCO's in TG1 who aren't making the situation better because they have made the choice to get that pension or are trapped by other circumstances. This group have seen the way the RAF has changed and are really quite cancerous at times due to the way they've been shafted.
The options for the higher echelons are quite clear.
a.)Ride it out and hope enough of the new breed stay around.
b.)Let the bitter SNCO's stay bitter but sweeten the new boys with better conditions.
c.)Sweeten the sour bunch and let the love filter down.

I suspect option a. will be taken as it's cheap

The techie pay differential

The techie pay differential

In answer to last couple of posts, I know of 10 Sgt leckies posts that are coming up inthe next 12 months at Leuchars, all from people that arent staying in past their pension point. Now some just fancy a change, but some expect to earn a fair bit more money than they can by staying in. So to get back on topic maybe higher pay will retain experienced SNCOs. As lets face it I chose to become a Techie because thats where the money was when I joined up. I understood that I would have to go through extensive trade training before I got a decent wage but the rewards would be worth it. Given the same choice now with no technical differential I would choose whichever trade paid the most the soonest and it definately wouldnt be technical.

I agree, i'd now join up as a PTI..... If I wasn't so fat... So chef it is then, i'll eat loads, get even fatter, whilst i'm there i'll practice sitting on my ar$e and saying "Ring JPAC" then retrade to admin clerk...:pDT_Xtremez_06:

Very accurate, at least from my perspective.

Sounds Good to me wouldnt complain if they did give TG1 a pay rise. In reality tho i think in the next few years everybody in ground trades will be on the same pay band. Most trades already are.

I totally agree that within a few years we will all be paid the same, and quit right too. After all who in their right mind would try and distinguish the value between a Ground Engineer flying around the world with OC Eng’s authority, authorising LIM’s and ADF’s and working 20 hour days (I hear the Herc boys are on around 200 days away each year!) Or any other Sgt in a non techie TG on higher pay band?

2 ‘merit’ promotions from Sgt to FS instead of 1. Don’t even go there.

Reality check: - If you don’t like it then vote with your feet, the message will soon get through. If you don’t mind it then shut the fcuk up and if you actually like it then you certainly aren’t TG1!

I agree, but people have been voting with their feet, I know loads who have PVR'd, and loads, including myself who just aren't gonna sign on again. Hopefully they've realised this and will do something about it, but I doubt it.. I'm not staying even if they do something, the techie trade is $hagged anyway, they're handing all the 'decent' jobs to civvies which will eventually cause skill fade, and losing loads of experienced guys at the same time by pi$$ing them off with stupid $hit like this.. I'm in my resettlement period now and hopefully by the time i'm due out all this recession cr@p will be over and nobody will have to worry about getting a job..

Thing is BB, a lot of punters on here have no idea what that level of responsibility is and what it's worth. With most people on the same pay band now, it's a shame that techies are leaving due to the short sightedness of the uber hierarchy. Pay 2000, the beginning of the end for a proud force IMO.::/:

I don't think its fair to use the GE's as an example after all they are a very small minority of the trade and everybody who VOLUNTEERS for GE duties knows how high the responsibility's are prior to applying. That dose not however distract from the argument of the level of responsibility that techie SNCO's clearly have in the aircraft engineering environment compared to SNCO's in trades where making mistakes can be much less critical.
