Families Quarters

Evening all,
Ive spent the last couple of days looking around the site, and there seem to be alot of questions on FQ/MQ's.
Having seen this I decided to set up a site with pictures and descriptions of quarters at different sites as the MOD are about as much use as tits on a fish when it comes to things like that!

Anyhoo, here is the site:
www.familiesquarters.co.cc

Dont worry about the co.cc, I was looking for a free domain name and this was it!

Can you all let me know what you think and if you have anything to add, email me from the site and chuck your two penneth in. The more replies I get, the more of a worthwhile site I can make it.

Obviously its only in early stages of development at the moment, so looks like a sack of ****e tied in the middle, but hopefully you will get the idea!

Anybody who recognises my house or any of the pictures, keep it to yourself please as I dont want all and sundry knowing where I live!!

Mods, if this is in the wrong section I apologise and if you could move it, it would be mucho appreciated.

Thanks

blanketstacker

Personally BS, I think it is a fantastic idea. I just wish that Defence Estates would put something similar together. Mine is also a two bedder but of a completely different layout.

Will hide all my clutter and will email pics to you.

Come on guys help out. This is a good initiative and could help you on your next move.

Ummmmm, are you allowed to do that?

Also, I can tell where your house is by studying the photos.

Pretty sure its the same as posting pictures of you in your house on facebook. As long as no MOD 'stuff' is in them, it shouldnt be a problem. I know Marham have a basic type what type of house you are likely to get on the internet.

Thanks! I decided to leave all the clutter out, just to show people how little storage space there is in this thing!!

Just checking mate. It just seemed like something you shouldnt do!
Have you checked with the rozza's to make sure?
I think the idea is fantastic and definately the way forward.

Good call MM. I will have a word with the PC's to see what they have to say on it. But im sure that all MOD housing stock is now owned by allinson homes and rented back to the military. Will do some digging and find out.

I have to admit i did think that this may be a bit of a security issue however well intentioned.

I was lucky this time, prior to posting i actually did Pre employment training first so i managed to look(all be it through the window) at my quarter prior to posting.

Forgive my ignorance but what sort of security issue could this possibly raise?

They are photos of someones lounge, kitchen and bedroom and as for the exterior shot, there isnt much detail there. In fact more information can be sought from google earth.

I apologise if I appear flippant, but I just dont see what the security risk is. Can anyone enlighten me?

Personally was thinking on the lines of (no offense intended) giving out details to someone that i personally wouldn't know from any stranger in the street.

There are other people on the goat that i know personally but in this case i's an unknown.

Hmmm, I guess, but I could email photos of my lounge, kitchen and bedroom to you, without you knowing who I was unless my personal email gave my full name.

The only info blanket stacker needs is which Unit the house is at.

Ace!!!

Ace!!!

Great idea, BS85!

I recently moved to Cottesmore and after asking the goaters for gen re FQs here, I was helped out loads by Sniffer, Muttywhitedog and MrMasher (and I'm very grateful to them all!).

Basically, they gave me loads of gen and, after I'd been allocated an address, even emailed me pics of the property!!!

I've done the same in the past for friends, etc. who've been moving to Germany & they too have found it to be a great help - especially in reassuring spouses & kids who'd never been out there before, so yeah, I think it's a fantastic idea!

I'll forward pics of my FQ at Cottesmore (and Ramstein & Boulmer) as soon as I've fished 'em out!

Defence Estates often publish photos of their blue ribbon patches with room pics.

It would be better if the pictures were of unoccupied FQ with no furniture / personal possessions on view. As long as the person taking the pics is careful with photos and valuables I dont see a problem.

Blanketstacker, I would recommend moderating the pics before you display and that you only carry low-res photos. I wouldnt recommend enhancements like Google Map links, or a comprehensive list of streets either.

You may wish to consider limiting access to those who register with an MoD email address. Problem there is that you will have to administer it and that might be a lot of work.

What do you plan to do with the advertising revenue?

I dont plan on getting any advertising revenue. The ads on the site at present are from bravenet who are hosting the site for free. If I started paying for a site, then I may start offering advertising space.
The proceeds from which would go towards the running of the site, followed by a service charity.

Brilliant idea

Brilliant idea

Blanketstacker85,

The Aussie military have a system that lets you look around vacant PMQ's on "virtual tours"and depending on your log in credentials lets you see what is available to you (based on service #). It is then possible to allocate the house...up to 3 months before move date! Think on it, arrive at house / telephone works / www connected / mail waiting for you why DHE are so behind beats me.

Digzster,
I agree completely, and until they do I think this is the way forward.

In answer to the question posted earlier in the thread.

Empty properties would be great, but it would be a while before I could start collating a database worth having. As such photographs of any type just to give people an idea for now is a good start.
I plan on eventually getting a rep on every station to liase with DHE and obtain pictures of empty properties, dimensions and specifications. But that is a long way away

IN ANSWER TO THE SECURITY RELATED QUESTIONS POSTED EARLIER IN THE THREAD
I have spoken to RAFP and DHE and they are both happy with the idea, DHE being almost, but not quite encouraging!!

So come on boys and girls, get those pictures and specs flooding in!!

Ace. Good effort fella. I was just concerned that publishing pictures of properties on MOD land might not be allowed.
Good on you for finding out and also for approaching DE.
To be honest its something that DE should have done themselves. They have plenty of opportunity to photograph empty quarters and they could refer you to a website such as yours or mail you pics of potential quarters with dimensions.

I do believe you live in my street opposite Sniffers street! Now I've seen whats in your house I'll be round when you've gone out!!:pDT_Xtremez_30:
