Gem the Shrinking Armourer

Gemarriot has unfortunately been told by the vet that he has to shed some weight or he'll be seeing the man upstairs sooner than he should. 4 stone 4 pounds or 60 pounds to be exact but as you can probably guess, he does like a beer and kebab every so often!

So, as an incentive to him he's going to do it sponsored. He has been ordered to the gym 5 times a week, although that probably involves at least 3 sessions of oggling the local birds, and the docs have told us they can provide a weekly weigh in for the supersized armourer.

Now, wheres the sponsorship fit in? Well, we have been told on the recent charities thread about the Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) guys at Selly Oak. They are the first guys to see the wounded back from war zones, and from what we have heard sometimes are dropped off literally with only the Desert DPM they wear. Gem has said himself that the thought that the lads coming back would pretty much be counting on him to make their lives more comfortable would also help him to shed the weight, and what e-goat aims to do is provide some essentials to the center. That are taken for granted like something to read (in the form of Nuts / Zoo / magazine subscriptions) something to wear for those without, and possibly more depending on the size of the pot.

We'll be running two different ways of sponsoring and one for people just to donate to the cause. Either way it will all end up helping the injured that get treated at Selly Oak.
  • A small sponsorship per pound lost - Exactly what it says on the tin, for every pound lost a small amount goes in the pot. Now seen as the target is 60 pounds if you pledge say 50p per pound, it'll end up as a total of £30 donated, 20p per pound works out to £12 and you can have any permeatation in between. It's almost like a staged donation to the pot.
  • A lump sum sponsorship - Again, exactly what it says on the tin except theres no rolling total, you pledge the amount but only payable once the man has shed his load.
  • Straight donation - No messing about, just money straight in the coffers to be used to make the wounded comfortable at Selly Oak.

Payment will have to be made either by direct bank transfer to the bank of e-goat, or by cheque payable to e-goat sent to mingmong (Treasurer). Details of the account to follow from the accountants.

This is all for a worthy cause, so dig deep and help the lads and lasses returning from battle.

Have you thought about setting up a Justgiving page up mate?? It makes it a lot easier for people to sponsor you and also generates gift aid from tax payers (an extra 25% gratis I think).

Don't worry Gem - I'll eat for two while you're staying off the Kebabs

And I'll stick 50p in for every pound you lose. So get yourself in shape as it's not often my wallet comes out :)

Is there a time limit on this or is just till he hits the 60 pounds off?

I'd like to do 50p per pound, just hoping I have funds when the time comes. :pDT_Xtremez_30:

good question and the answer is up tp you really. Ideally I would like to see money start coming in ASAP because the need for goodies for the troops is there now. To that aim I will be posting progress reports and those of you sponsoring by the pound can pay as I lose so to speak or when I have lost say 10 or 20 pounds.

Thanks everyone so far, your support will make all the difference.

In answer to the question about using justgiving to set this up, it was considered by the mods when Gem suggested he wanted to do his slimming for charity, but because we want to buy DMWS specific items rather than send a straight donation then using justgiving isn't really viable.

I will be going to visit e-goat's bank manager tomorrow or Tuesday to set up a sub account to the main e-goat account that will be used exclusively for Gem's effort and keep the accounting both easier and transparent.
One of the suggestions/requests that is sure to be mentioned is using PayPal for donations, this was discussed by the mods when we were setting this up, and we decided we would try to avoid using it because of the amount of money that PayPal would skim off the final total.

If you wish to send a cheque, then drop me a PM and I will give my postal address so that cheques (made payable to e-goat) can be put directly into the bank account.

All donations/sponsorship will be handled by myself in the strictest of confidence, there will be absolutely no behind the scenes discussion as to who has donated what.

Thanks for your support for this worthy cause, and best of luck to Gem for his slimming!

Gem have you considered amputation? It would certainly spped things up and it's such a lot less effort than starving yourself for months...it could be over in an hour or so...:pDT_Xtremez_42:

Put me down for 50p a pound and I'll settle as and when you reach what you assume is a mile stone (or whenever you like)...

I had considered amputation but RTW reckons that doesn't count.

I will give a lump sum payment for your weight loss GEM.
I lost 64lb after my car accident in 10 months! So yes it is possible but it is also a very drastic way to do it.The accident was over 2 years ago and the weight has stayed off so out of something bad comes something good.Bonus eh!
Good luck buddy!:pDT_Xtremez_28:
