HMS Queen Elizabeth - (She was boss of the Navy when their first big victory happened in 1588).... why not...

HMS Prince of Wales - Battleship of the King George V class (Sister ships were King George V, Anson, Howe, Duke of York). Fought the Bismarck with HMS Hood (sunk in the encounter) and badly damaged. Sunk with HMS Repulse by Japanese torpedo and bomber aircraft, 10th December 1941.

Does anybody know the name of class....

Late and over budget class. ::p:

Im impressed they are getting steam catapults fitted. But that was probably a requirement as we are the 51st state. Borrowing a few super hornets perhaps. Altough by the time Bae have helped to draw out the JSF the carriers might be floating!

Defo need harder names maybe HMS Arnham, HMS Overlord:pDT_Xtremez_30:

Lets look at this politically, Tony B liar has just poked off leaving Gordon Brown (Mr Charisma ) the poisoned chalis that is the current labour government. So realistically if the tory's sort their lives out and David Cameron does seem the right man to do the job, the next government will be conservative.

Chances of those two warships being built.....NAH ! Lets not forget the government has just commited billions to updating our nuclear subs with a more efficient system for wiping out the human race.

Can't see both being built at the same time. IMHO it won't survive a change in government. There are other things the country needs first.

The class is second class and I think HMS Stormbringer and HMS Deathwave

would be apt.

I'm surprised they haven't been named HMS Surrender 1 & 2.

Here's a preview of the RN's latest shipborne self defense system...........

Rorkes Drift and Mafeking would be apt names, 2 victories against overwhelming numbers of enemy by a few brave men. Kind of what is expected these days.

How about naming them after two of the RN's more recent celebrities

we could have HMS "Give me back my I-Pod":pDT_Xtremez_19:

and HMS "Chubby Munter":pDT_Xtremez_31:

The first ship to be built always has the class named after them. Therefore they will be the Queen Elizabeth class, because I can't see it being the other way around. :)

However by the time they are in service It might be the Queen Camilla class!!

I don't care what they are named, so long as I don't have to go aboard the boats I'll be happy.

Do we need these carriers to defend our shores......................or are they to be part of the US reserve fleet?

Quite honestly, I would prefer to see investment in our air defense squadrons, security at our ports and airports, and european rail links.

Being a Crab through and through I not totally gen'd up on Navy Org but don't carriers need to be protected by a task force of other boats, didn't think they had many spare anymore.

Also with the Typhoon mod'd for air to ground why not make it good for the carier too.

Be long gone by the time they get wet myself though.

There is an e-petition here that requests one of the Type 45 Destroyers be named HMS Iron Lady

to honour the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven, by naming a ship in Her Majesty's Royal Navy "HMS Iron Lady"

New Carriers

New Carriers

Does anyone think this is a ploy to get the serviceman's vote in an election?
Closely followed by HMS TSR2 and HMS F111, also victims of a Labour government.

I have seen the plans as part of the "consultation phase" it's fookin big and it is all geared up for the new hovering piece of spam s**t, and even luckier than that it will have cats on it so you can all take a turn on the floating turd. no matter which version we get conned into buying, enjoy sailing around in a square off lossie, us poor gits at HMS Cottesmore are sick of it, and just where the hell do they think they are going to get a 1000 blokes to man the ships? clones or are drunks in pompey going to find a sixpence in the bottom of their pint.

As refreshing as it is to see some real investment in the UK's defensive/offensive capability (and on that note, I'll beleive it when I see it), these two new carriers will be about as useful as Typhoon or our replacement nuclear subs. Typhoon came too late to contribute to winning the cold war, which makes me wonder what kind of engagement these two ships will see. Surely in a world of asymmetric warfare, the money could be better put to use on IED proof vehicles, smaller more agile landing craft, helicopter carriers, UAVs, intelligence gathering etc. What use is a supercarrier just over the horizon, when our ill equipped men and women are being torn to shreds on the ground. Haven't we learnt anything from watching the americans? Shear firepower alone will not keep Britain and its overseas interests safe.

And God help us if we decide to follow in the Yanks footsteps when naming these two - can you imagine an HMS Tony Blair or an HMS Gordon Brown?
