well it seems that nothing has changed since I was in service and working with the pngos. Was down south in 85/86 with a certain scottish regiment (A&S highlanders) - nice enough in their own right, they were kept away from most people and didnt cause too much of a problem - probably the cold made them feal at home. But they were repaced by the queens - and a nastier bunch of cnts you wouldnt want to meet. The first week there they were banned from any bar on the island, they would mug anyone and everyone who entered their accommodation area or passing through to the gyms. They would deliberately set fire to things so they could attack and mug the firecrews coming to put it out (they eventually were persuaded to provide cover again as long as they had an escort and some hairy alligators with them!!!) - and (this im not sure of but pretty certain it happened) they killed a sailor in a bar fight.

I know the usual excuse is they are "warriors" and need their "agression" - but what they tend to lack or not even have is DISCIPLINE - without that they are just thugs.

A sailor was killed by the brown jobs sometime between MPA opening in 85 and my first trip down saff in Oct 88. Story goes that the pongo’s chucked him though a window and dragged him back, severing an artery in the process. Cheshire’s were down there when I got there in 88, the night in 38 transit before getting the Eric up to Byron, there was a riot in the corridor, me and the scope from Alice I was with had to barricaded the fooking Door as there was no lock on it. Bunch of animals.

"They recruit from the lower social orders" Not my words but an extract from the 7th report of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee in an attempt to explain the poor standard of dental hygiene in the British Army. That would explain an awful lot then. In addition, those lucky enough to transit through Catterick should call in at Darlington College at Catterick where they will find remedial classes in reading and writing for new recruits to the British Army. All that aside I have worked with some excellent pongoes, but sadly a lot are promoted way ahead of their abilities.

I suppose the next step will be to produce training manuals without words and only pictures like the septics and their cronic illiterat armed forces. They recruit from the criminal classes - we just encourage them

Oh the irony.

'Chronically illiterate' perhaps?

I can only imply based on what I see.

Strangely enough I used to be in the infantry even though I'm from what could be described as a middle class background. I went to a well-established public school in Surrey, gained enough qualifications to join just about any trade in the Armed Forces and I've never really been known to suffer from uncontrollable outbursts of rage, either before I joined the Army, after I undertook infantry training or now that I'm in the RAF. I joined the infantry because its what I wanted to do. My grandfather was an infantryman and my great-grandfather was a Rifleman, as I later became.

Of course that wouldn't fit into a cosy stereotype though would it?

Yes its true that the Army does attract a great deal of poorly educated people or people from deprived backgrounds but that isn't a negative. The opportunities offered through military service to better yourself and achieve a sense of belonging is a gift to these people in exchange for their service. And yes some Army personnel are idiots who do stupid things such as breaking into NAAFI stores to steal beer but their are also many dodgy idiots in the RAF, we (in the Armed Forces) are a cross section of society and not completely immune to the variances of character found in anyone else in the country.

Of course problems with the Army seem high when we in the RAF work with them but generally on operations the ratios of RAF to Army are a lot higher in their favour, which condenses our view of them. Return back to somewhere like Brize Norton where there are shed loads of RAF personnel and the rose-tinted specs come off a little.

I'm all for a little inter-service banter (mainly because I have the luxury of being able to play two sides of this three way battle) but I have noticed that in the last few years this banter seems to have grown barbs. Perhaps this is down to the high tempo operations we've all been under for quite a while now and quick to blame attitudes that these seem to have created, perhaps not. All I really know is that we all have a job to do and besides our enemies we face in foreign fields our only other enemy is this lackadaisical government and their toadying civil servants.

Thats my 2p worth anyway...
